Life before ETC Tax

Before joining ETC, Robert has spent over 10 years working in tax and financial services for a range of businesses including Big 4, in-house for a variety of companies in different sectors, a boutique tax consultancy and most recently a mid-tier firm of chartered accountants as a tax manager.

Why a career in tax?

The only things in life which are certain are death and taxes. I didn’t fancy being an undertaker, so I picked the latter as a career option.

Actually…I still ask myself this question now! It is something that progressed over time. My first role out of university was focused on forensic investigations and contentious insolvency matters. Given the work involved within this there was a heavy tax focus on a great many cases and I soon found the tax world to be highly interesting and I relished the technical challenges of understanding what detailed legislation with extensive tax case law, all of which makes for a varied and challenging professional life. But aside from this and chiefly, I very much enjoy the ‘problem solving’ aspect of tax, that is, listening to a client’s wishes and concerns and formulating a robust plan to best suit their objectives.

My best (and worst) bits

My best? I am adaptable to any circumstance and can provide an all-round service to entrepreneurial clients from start-ups through business sales, successions and retirements.

My worst? Linked into this, I can take on too much!
