Keith primarily specialises in advising on all aspects of VAT, but can also advise on other indirect taxes. Keith works closely with ETC’s other tax specialists to help clients identify opportunities for VAT savings and to ensure that VAT risks are minimised.

Keith has many years of experience advising clients in all business sectors, although he has developed a particular specialism in relation to land & property and financial services.

Life before ETC

Keith started his career with 10 years as a VAT inspector with HM Customs & Excise before moving into practice, where he has spent 20 years working at Deloitte, KPMG and most recently Dow Schofield Watts.

Why a career in tax?

I enjoyed my time with HM Revenue & Customs but felt that I wanted to learn more about how business worked, which was something that moving into practice enabled.

I particularly enjoy working with SMEs and owner managers, as the people you deal with are more likely to be truly connected to the business.

Although VAT compliance is an essential aspect of our service, I’m particularly interested in the wider legal aspects of VAT, particularly how other elements of law (such as contract law) interacts with VAT law. I also like working with a diverse range of businesses.

My best (and worst) bits

I like to think that I’m patient and pragmatic and can simplify complex issues.

I do have a tendency to talk a bit too much sometimes, and my jokes don’t always work.
