Life before ETC

Jerry trained with F W Stephens in London before moving to work in tax at a boutique tax firm in his hometown in Kent and more recently has run his own tax advisory practice.

Why a career in tax?

Having qualified in a general practice firm, I wanted to specialise so I chose tax because the subject allows for a close working relationship with the clients and suited my personality being an ‘argumentative’ type. Planning is all about understanding a client’s needs and then devising a legal way of getting those needs met. This type of work can be very rewarding making real differences to people’s lives. HMRC are now mandated to maximise their tax take. The good work goes on.

My best (and worst) bits

Best bits – Meeting new clients, creating detailed plans and keeping up to date with new tax laws

Worst bits – Getting stuck in traffic and delayed trains (normally when visiting clients). HMRC using retrospective laws. Successive governments messing about playing politics with tax law.

Three words to describe ETC

Enterprising, Innovative and Honest.
