What is your position here at ETC Tax?
As a senior manager I work across all areas of the business to deliver tax advice to ETC’s broad and varied client base.
What do you enjoy the most about your role?
We all know that tax has a direct impact on individuals and not to mention businesses, I really enjoy working with individual clients, coming up with solutions and trying to help them navigate the complex rules of tax.
I find it really rewarding at the end of the job knowing I have possibly saved people some money but more importantly, saved them a lot of worry and stress as many people come to us worried about their tax position so knowing I have helped them give me my job satisfaction.
My main enjoyment lies in meeting new people, which I do every day, our client based is extremely broad, I like that, it makes every day so different.
One good thing to come out of the Covid-19 pandemic is that it is now much easier to connect with new potential clients all over the world. Yesterday I had a video call with a potential client in Hong Kong and another client based in Australia!
What is your area of expertise?
I particularly focus on the tax affairs of high-net-worth individuals which includes advising on family trusts, inheritance tax and wealth succession, personal tax including residency and domicile matters, and capital gains tax advice.
What was the career path that brought you to ETC Tax?
Once I completed my degree, I got a graduate job with Deloitte in the same year I left university.
I was at Deloitte for 8 years in the private client tax team and thoroughly enjoyed my time there and gained a lot of experience. When the opportunity came up at ETC Tax I decided a change was what I needed, and I knew it fitted with the next stage of my career and so I made the move here in April 2020.
Why a career in tax?
I studied Accounting and Finance at Lancaster University and immediately decided that I did not want to be an accountant! Accounting just wasn’t for me, but I needed to put the degree to some use and so I studied some tax modules that appealed to me much more and then the rest is history. I have always enjoyed working with numbers and enjoy meeting new people and so here I am.
Tax…. Why do you love it so much?
I enjoy meeting and talking to new people, which is a vital skill for this career, especially working with the private clients. I also love the variety of work that you get with this role, no clients have the same set of circumstances and so you are constantly learning and adapting the legislation to advise on all kinds of client scenarios.
Tell us about a recent case you worked on and how you made a difference?
I worked with a number of new clients throughout January to ensure that their self-assessment tax returns were submitted to HMRC on time. Even with the more basic aspects of managing out client’s tax affairs, they were so relieved that we took the stress and calculations away from them and dealt with everything on their behalf. It is great to receive positive feedback from our clients and see that our help is appreciated.
When all the tax problems of the day are solved how do you spend your time?
Spending time renovating my home and trying to become an interiors Instagram sensation. Apart from that, I am currently spending a lot of time watching Netflix (aren’t we all at the minute) and the rest of the time I am obsessing over Gandalf (my gorgeous grey British Shorthair kitten).
