What is your position at ETC Tax?
My role is Associate Director here at ETC Tax, I have been a tax adviser for over 23 years working across all areas of tax advisory. I am also a fellow of the ICAEW.
What do you enjoy the most about your role?
There are a lot of reasons why I enjoy my role so much: I get great satisfaction in offering solutions to clients’ issues. Being able to meet clients (albeit over zoom or teams at the moment) to provide clear, practical, commercial advice which is also tax efficient and manages risk is extremely rewarding.
Do you have a particular area of expertise?
I enjoy advising on all areas of tax, but I do have a particular interest in mergers and acquisitions and corporate reorganisations. I regularly advise on group reorganisations whether this be to split out their activities, structuring a deal for an existing shareholder or implementing a share scheme to incentivise the workforce or key personnel which may be a precursor to a sale.
What brought you to ETC Tax?
I joined ETC Tax due to several reasons: the unparalleled experience in the team together with the quality and advice of the work undertaken. As a firm, we provide robust tax advice in all areas of taxation and fully support our clients and other professional advisers in navigating the ever-changing tax landscape.
Life before ETC
Before joining ETC, I spent the first ten years of my tax career at Big 4 firms, Pricewaterhouse Coopers and KPMG. It was then I took a leap of faith to join a regional independent practice where I landed the role of Head of Tax and eventually become a business owner which gave the opportunity to see things from another perspective. A few years later, I was given the opportunity of Tax Director at CLB Coopers (which was acquired by the Baldwins group) where I split my time heading up their Lancaster Office’s tax department and being an integral part of their North West tax advisory team.
After here I ran my own tax consultancy business, prior to being approached by ETC and as they say the rest is history!
Tax… Why do you enjoy it so much?
Well, I Didn’t fancy being an auditor and the higher salary for tax graduates was appealing ha ha! Seriously I am a logical thinker and really enjoy problem solving which is a key skill in being a tax adviser. The opportunity to meet clients and listen to them talk about their businesses and their aspirations, finding out what keeps them awake at night is music to my ears!
Tell us about a recent case you worked on and how you made a difference?
Recently I acted for a couple who ran a successful trading business which they built up over the years and with some uncertainty in the economy with COVID19 we were able to form a group to protect assets as well as setting up a separate family investment company for them which will allow them to manage their wealth and pass it over to their children in a phased, controlled manner whilst ensuring that any future growth is outside their estate. This ticked all the boxes but the icing on the cake was to structure the arrangement so they could pay private school fees efficiently and also ensure that any wealth passed to the kids now or in the future was ‘ring fenced’ should one of the children divorce for example.
When all the tax problems of the day are solved how do you spend your time?
My wife (and friends) would say I am obsessed with football and running, regularly running 40+ miles per week and watching every televised football game (well everyone I can get away with) when I am not at Anfield or on my travels watching my beloved Liverpool Football Club with my son or ferrying the kids to sport fixtures across the country. We definitely work hard play hard at ETC Tax.
