What is your position at ETC Tax?
ETC Tax has a wide variety of clients, my role as a Senior Manager enables me to work across all areas of the business delivering tax advice.
What do you enjoy the most about your role?
Tax has a direct impact on us all, like I mention further down it is one of life’s certainties! I am a fan of the variety the role brings and the fact I have a huge part to play in helping people with their complex tax issues. Every day is different, and I can see the positive impact my job has on people’s lives.
What is your area of expertise?
I have a particular interest in the tax affairs of owner managed businesses, I also have a keen interest in the personal affairs of the company shareholders, including profit extraction, exit planning and family wealth preservation.
What was the career path that brought you to ETC Tax?
After completing my University Degree I spent over 10 years working in tax and financial services for a range of businesses including ‘The Big 4’.
I also worked in-house for a variety of companies in different sectors as well as a boutique tax consultancy and most recently a mid-tier firm of chartered accountants as a tax manager before securing my position at ETC Tax, firstly as Tax Manager and then after a short time promoted to Senior Tax Manager.
Why a career in tax?
The only things in life which are certain are death and taxes. I did not fancy being an undertaker, so I picked the latter as a career option. My first role out of university was focused on forensic investigations and contentious insolvency matters. Given the work involved within this there was a heavy tax focus on a great many cases. I soon found the tax world to be highly interesting and I relished the technical challenges of understanding detailed legislation backed up by extensive tax case law (or at least trying), all of which makes for a varied and challenging professional life.
Tax…. Why do you love it so much?
I very much enjoy the ‘problem solving’ aspect of tax, that is, listening to a client’s wishes and concerns and formulating a robust plan to best suit their objectives. I enjoy working with new people, which is an essential skill for this career.
There is also a great variety of work not to mention clients within the role, so I am constantly learning and being challenged which is what keeps me motivated.
Tell us about a recent case you worked on and how you made a difference?
I recently secured an R&D refund of £80k for a dairy farmer who had employed some innovative techniques to test the soil quality of their farm and adjust the quality and mineral content of the cattle feed accordingly. This was a huge boost to their cash flow and will make a big difference to their business in the short to medium term.
When all the tax problems of the day are solved how do you spend your time?
Outside of work, I am a big fan of the countryside. Walking, running, cycling… anything in the fresh air. Also, I am a big motorsport fan and (outside of COVID restrictions) can be found trackside watching the touring cars or British superbikes.
