What is your position here at ETC Tax?
I am an Associate Director at ETC Tax.
What do you enjoy the most about your role?
I am a people person, so I really enjoy meeting new people and getting to know their tax challenges and in turn solving their problems. Getting involved with my clients, building up the trust and seeing a job through from start to finish is very rewarding for me personally.
What is your area of expertise?
As a Chartered Tax Adviser and Trust and Estate Practitioner I have advised both private clients and fellow professionals on tax planning projects across a broad range of taxes.
I have a real interest in tax investigations, especially where clients require representation against allegations of fraudulent or criminal conduct.
What was the career path that brought you to ETC Tax?
Since the mid 90’s I worked at a top 20 independent practice, joining as an apprentice in the tax department. In 2010 after working my way up through the ranks I joined the tax consultancy team preparing a variety of tax planning reports. It was here I developed as a specialist in tax investigations, this led me to ultimately head up the tax investigations team for the firm. Within the firm I worked closely with the tax partners to develop and expand the tax consultancy side of the practice, so when I saw the vacancy at ETC I felt it was the most natural next step in my career considering my working history.
Why a career in tax?
To be honest I saw myself as an accountant as I was naturally good at numbers however when the opportunity arose as an apprentice to work within tax, I soon realised that the variety was just what my career ordered!
Tax…. Why do you love it so much?
The people, their problems, the variety and the fact no day is the same!
Tell us about a recent case you worked on and how you made a difference?
I have recently had a lot of success in defending clients from incorrect enquiry notices, meaning they have not been subjected to the needless stress of an enquiry where HMRC were trying to operate outside of their powers.
When all the tax problems of the day are solved how do you spend your time?
Living in Devon, I spend a lot of time with the family on the Dartmoor or exploring around the local bays and coves in my kayaks. I am a keen sportsman, playing golf, football and cycling, though it’s fair to say my enthusiasm makes up for a general lack of ability!
